CHECKLIST
DOCUMENTS PREPARED BY J. WEHMILLER
This form is a routing document for
the approval of new and revised academic programs. Page 2 will serve as an attachment to the
Faculty Senate agenda. Proposing
department should complete form, attach as a cover page and forward to the
college dean. Documentation should include copy of curriculum as it is to
appear in the Undergraduate and Graduate Catalog. Proposals must arrive to the
Undergraduate/Graduate Committee by November in order to reach the Faculty
Senate by March 1. Proposals received
after this date cannot be implemented the following year nor included in the
catalog for that year.

a. Rationale for
creation, revision, or deletion:
The creation of this track in the
Environmental Science major represents a concerted effort on the part of
several units to offer formal opportunities for undergraduate students to study
marine science. The
Development of the Marine
Environment track has resulted in the need to make small modifications in
either the content or the terminology of some of the other tracks within the
ENSC major. We have changed the original
title of the Geology track to “Geological Environment” in order to create a set
of similar titles for the four tracks (Atmospheric, Biological, Geological, and
Marine Environments, respectively) that will exist within the ENSC major. Other than these minor modifications,
the Marine Environment track requires that no new courses be created, thereby
utilizing existing resources to create this multi-faceted program.
b. Summary of program:
The new program creates a fourth
track within the Environmental Science (ENSC) major. This inter-departmental major has existed
since 1991, and has a steady enrollment of between 60 and 120 majors. The three existing tracks (referred to
as "concentrations" in current
and recent editions of the University catalog) in the ENSC major have
geographic (atmospheric), geologic, and biological emphasis, and students in
each of these tracks have sufficient credits in either GEOG, GEOL, or BISC to
earn the equivalent of a minor in one of these disciplines. Additionally, the ENSC major requires a
rigorous set of core courses in math, physics, chemistry and selected courses
from the three collaborating departments.
The Marine Environment track will
parallel the existing structure of the other three concentrations. The same body of core courses will be
required of the Marine Environment students, and the existing MAST 482 (Introduction
to Ocean Sciences) will be added to the
core requirements for all ENSC majors.
Additionally, two courses from a selection of MAST courses will be
required for the Marine Environment track, just as the other concentrations
require two upper-level courses from each of the discipline departments.
All ENSC majors must take at least
one course with a significant field experience.
As the ENSC major has evolved, a number of courses have been used to
satisfy this requirement. Two existing
MAST courses (MAST 464 – Marine Science Summer Internship and MAST 468 –
Undergraduate Research) are proposed as mechanisms to satisfy this requirement.
