List program changes for curriculum revisions:

For Both Concentrations:

Remove MUSC 397 Contemporary Harmony

The course was replaced by MUSC 407 Contemporary Music Literature in a previous revision and the course has been deleted from the catalog.   However, the course was not removed from the catalog copy.

Move MUSC 484 Recording Techniques to shared “Theory” Requirements for both concentrations.

For Music Theory Concentration

Reduce requirement for MUSC 298 Beginning Composition to 2 semesters

Add MUSC 419 Music Theory Research

Replace the option MUSC 420 Advanced Composition (2 semesters) or 1 semester of MUSC 420 plus Music Elective with 5 credits of Music Elective

List new courses required for the new or revised curriculum:

(Be aware that approval of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)

MUSC419 Music Theory Research

Other affected units:

(List other departments affected by this new or revised curriculum.  Attach permission from the affected units.  If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)

None

Rationale:

(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)

In order to provide the Music Theory concentration major a program unique and realistic for that concentration, the music composition component is being reduced from 10 credits (actually a minimum of 7 with a possible 3-credit elective) to 2 credits.  In the place of those credits, the proposal calls for:

(1)    a new course (MUSC 419 – Music Theory Research – 3 credits) which will give the student more experience then s/he had before in research methods and better preparation than before for the thesis (MUSC 421);

(2)    Five credits of  electives; we are recommending that they be applied credits but not requiring that they be applied credits

Program Requirements:

(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the Course Catalog.  If this is a revision, be sure to indicate the changes being made to the present curriculum.)
