a. Rationale
for creation, revision, or deletion:
1. The first part is to reduce the number of general
education credits from 21 to 18, in line with the current general education
requirement for Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Economics. This will
resulting a reduction of minimal number of credits for graduation from 128 to
125.
Some of our majors start their degree program in
mathematics late, a reduction of total number though small, will allow them an
easier time to finish the major requirements in mathematics and related areas.
2. The second part is to change the 18 additional
credits in upper division mathematics required after completion of basic 200
and 300 level courses to at least 9 credits in mathematics and at most 9
credits in related courses from other departments. The total number required in
this category is same as before, 18 credits.
The rationale is to allow majors to select courses
where they can see how mathematics is applied in another discipline. Allowable
courses are from the Departments of Computer Science, Economics, Physics and
Statistics. A current list is enclosed. Further courses may be added by the
Undergraduate Studies Committee in the department in the future..
