Rationale:
(Explain your reasons for creating,
revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)
The Department of Foreign Languages
and Literatures wishes both to enhance the academic rigor of this major and to
reflect the philosophy driving the major on the curricular level. The idea
behind the Three Languages Major is to provide students with expertise in three
languages but to do so in a graduated manner. That is, Language One is intended
to be the language in which students will gain the greatest expertise; this is
to be their focus language. For this reason, course requirements for Language
One were enhanced so as to differentiate it from Language Two. The requirements
for Language Two were felt to be rigorous enough. Requirements for Language
Three, the language of least emphasis on the students part, were enhanced but
not so as to overshadow Language Two.
Students selecting this major would,
as a result of our proposed changes, acquire linguistic competence in three
languages but be truly expert in Language One and very competent in Languages
Two and Three.
