a. Rationale
for creation, revision, or deletion:
In 1992 an African Studies Program was founded at the University of Delaware, with the goal of providing an intellectually coherent program of study based on regularly offered courses in a few disciplines. Over the past decade the African Studies Program at UD has grown considerably, especially in terms of faculty who can teach African Studies courses. At its inception, the program was represented by faculty in Anthropology, History and Black American Studies. Today there are faculty who teach African Studies courses in Anthropology, Art History, Black American Studies, English, French, History, Nutrition and Dietetics, and Political Science. Moreover, there are now two UD winter session programs in Africa that are offered during alternating winters in Ghana and South Africa. These two programs are co-directed by UD faculty from departments as diverse as Education, Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management, and Individual and Family Studies. At the same time, the number of African Studies minors remains far too low. In October 2002 there are four students registered as African Studies minors. As a result of both of these the growth in faculty and courses and the stagnation in minors the African Studies Program is proposing to revise the requirements of the minor. Apart from deleting courses no longer offered, we have increased the number of courses that count toward the minor and we have allowed students wider scope in choosing the courses for their individual minors. We have also fully incorporated the UD study abroad programs in Africa, a key element in any students attempt to understand Africa. Indeed, we feel that the proposed new African Studies minor offers UD undergraduates an exciting opportunity to learn more about an increasingly marginalized part of the world from a variety of perspectives and a diverse faculty.
In revising the African Studies minor, the program committee has surveyed African Studies minors and concentrations at other universities, as well as the other areas studies programs at the University of Delaware. As now revised, the UD African Studies minor is very consistent with similar programs at other institutions.
[Please note that FREN 458 and FREN 459 are new
courses, being proposed to the Educational Affairs Committee during fall
2002. Please also note that some
courses listed - ENGL 382, HIST 457 HIST 475, and NTDT 452 - are topics or
problems courses. They only count
toward the African Studies minor when they are taken under the title listed
below.]
