a. Rationale for creation, revision,
or deletion:
There is a modification of the
existing BS program following curriculum review by department's undergraduate
studies committee and NSF Virge committee.
The department is going to change
the existing course Math300-Probability and Statistics (4 credits) into two
separate courses, Math 350-Probability (3 credits) and Math 450-Statistics (3
credits). The required 4 credit course Math 300 will be replaced by Math 350
together with a new one credit seminar course Math 267-Invitation to
Mathematics. The seminar course is to introduce sophmore majors to various
disciplines in mathematics. It is hoped that their interest in research will
get stimulated at this early level.
In addition, the course Math
512-Contemporary Applications of Mathematics is declared as a capstone course.
Other required upper division
mathematics have been re-aligned to give more flexibility to students in this
program.
The total number of credits required
for mathematics stays the same.
For the second writing course, we
have added English 410-Technical Writing as an alternative to English 312.
The total number of credits required
for graduation has been changed from 125
to 124 in conformity with
all other mathematics degree
prgrams.
b.
Summary of program:
Some of the required mathematics
courses have been restructured to stimulate our students interest toward an
applicable area of mathematics. A 1-credit seminar has been designed to
introduce students to department faculty, government and industry research interests.
The total number of compulsory
credits with the twelve maximum credits in foreign language included come to a
grand total of one hundred and four (104).
The minimum number of credits
required for graduation is reduced from 125 to 124.
