Rationale:
(Explain your reasons for creating,
revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)
The Department is moving to a cross
disciplinary curriculum. We are educating the artists and designers of tomorrow
and want to create a broad curriculum for students to use as a palette. Being
an artist in the art arena today does not necessarily mean working alone in a
studio. Today’s artistic practice
includes collaboration, problem solving and crossing boundaries between
traditional artistic disciplines. The
needs of today’s artist are broadly based rather than in a singular artistic
discipline. For example, a 2-diminsional
artist might include painting, printmaking, computer imaging and video in an
exhibition. Students need a broad base
of experience on their artistic palette to move forward with an artistic
career.
The BFA Fine Art Program revision is based on eliminating the
concentrations from the major (Painting, Photography, Ceramics, Sculpture and
Printmaking) to encourage cross-disciplinary work across the Fine Art
curriculum. The BFA Fine Arts Program revision proposal demands that all
sophomores take a “core” of intro classes in painting, photography,
printmaking, sculpture and ceramics. Upon completion of the sophomore “core”
students will have a basic conceptual and technical understanding of each
discipline. Currently we have seniors who take a 200 level course and find they
wish they had taken the course earlier to build upon. The new Fine Arts BFA
Degree Program will present artistic possibilities to students at a much
earlier point in their artistic education. Alternatively,
a student does have the option after completing the sophomore core of take
courses in one concentration. For
example they could take every painting
course that is offered as they fill their 300/400 requirements. Students will chart their courses through
advising sessions with faculty.
The students will then elect (under
the mentorship of their advisor) the 12 classes (36 credits) to take their
junior and senior years. The classes
they elect will further develop their visual, creative and critical abilities.
Students will be encouraged to explore cross-disciplinary themes in their work
as they move from medium to another. For example, a student might be developing
themes based on the figure in painting and at the same time be working on a
correlated series in printmaking.
Student will still be required to
take 12 credits of Art History or 9 credits of Art History and 3 credits of Art
315 Contemporary issues.
Program
Requirements:
(Show the new or revised curriculum
as it should appear in the Course Catalog.
If this is a revision, be sure to indicate the changes being made to the
present curriculum.)
Concentration requirements have been
eliminated and replaced with 36 credits of 300 and 400 level FAVC electives to
create an interdisciplinary emphasis.
