Rationale:
A
3-year postponement to fall of 2007 for permanent approval of the program
leading to the PhD in Entomology and Applied Ecology is needed for a more complete
assessment. The extension for 3 years
will allow enough time for the first group of Ph.D. degree completions and for
more students currently enrolled in the M.S. program to be reclassified at the
doctoral level. The normal time after
the baccalaureate to obtain a Ph.D. in this field is 5 to 6 years. The Ph.D. program in Entomology and Applied Ecology was initiated
September 1, 2000, after provisional approval by the Faculty Senate in
1999.
Since
fall of 2000, six students have been admitted into the PhD program. Two withdrew for personal reasons, leaving
four that are progressing in the program at a satisfactory rate. It is projected that four PhD students will
graduate by 2007 and several new ones are expected to enter the program by
then, some after completing the MS in the department as part of being
reclassified into the PhD program.
Completion of the MS before being admitted to the PhD program is
preferred by the faculty, thus students in this status do not appear on the PhD
record for at least 2 years. Ten out of
the present 30 MS students are projected for reclassification to the PhD
program after completion of the MS.
Program Requirements: The department originally requested a 2-year extension, but,
after review of the proposal, the Graduate Studies Committee recommended a
3-year extension.
