The Perry Initiative
The Perry Initiative is a nonprofit organization with a mission of inspiring young women to be leaders in the exciting fields of orthopaedic surgery and engineering. The Perry Initiative is named in honor of Dr. Jacquelin Perry, who was one of the first 10 female orthopaedic surgeons in the country and was a mentor to countless women and men in the field throughout her career. It was founded in 2009 by Dr. Jenni Buckley (a mechanical engineer) and Dr. Lisa Lattanza (an orthopaedic surgeon). Engineers and orthopaedic surgeons work hand-in-hand to develop safe and effective implants for repairing broken bones, torn ligaments, and worn-out joints. Strong partnerships between surgeons and engineers are essential for improving the performance of orthopaedic implants and creating solutions to unmet clinical needs, and women are historically underrepresented in both of these careers.
The first Perry Outreach Program for high school students was held in the summer of 2009 in San Francisco, California, and in 2010 the high school program expanded nationwide. In 2012, The Perry Initiative started the Medical School Outreach Program to encourage first- and second-year female medical students to pursue careers in orthopaedic surgery. Today, The Perry Initiative runs more than 30 day-long outreach programs nationwide, reaching over 1,000 high school, college and medical students.

THE ARTHRITIS FOUNDATION
The Arthritis Foundation is the largest national nonprofit organization that supports more than 100 types of arthritis and related conditions. Founded in 1948, with headquarters in Atlanta, the Arthritis Foundation has multiple service points located throughout the country. We're also the largest private, nonprofit contributor to arthritis research in the world, funding more than $450 million in research grants since 1948. The Foundation helps people take control of arthritis by providing public health education; pursuing public policy and legislation; and conducting evidence-based programs to improve the quality of life for those living with arthritis. More than 52 million Americans are affected by arthritis with 300,000 being children.
The Delaware Office is part of the Mid Atlantic Region; which includes the states of Delaware, Maryland,Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Washington, D.C. Local events are held in Delaware including the Walk to Cure Arthritis, Bone Bash, Jingle Bell Run and Better Living With Arthritis Expo. Foundation supported Tai Chi, exercise and aquatics programs are offered statewide. Kids Rheum events help connect local families and children with arthritis and volunteers work together on advocacy and policy issues on behalf of patients.
The Delaware Rehabilitation Institute supports the annual Bone Bash each October as an event sponsor. The Bone Bash brings Delaware's musculoskeletal and business communities together for a good cause masquerading as a good time. Each year guest speakers share their personal experiences with arthritis and accomplished medical honorees are recognized. In 2010, Dr. Thomas S. Buchanan, Director of the Delaware Rehabilitation Institute, was recognized as one of the inaugural Bone Bash Medical Honorees.

THE DELAWARE Orthopaedic Symposium
The Delaware Society of Orthopaedic Surgeons (DSOS) is a specialty medical education association comprised of orthopaedic surgeons throughout the state of Delaware. Founded in 1982, DSOS engages in health policy and advocacy initiatives on behalf of musculoskeletal patients and the profession of orthopaedic surgery as a whole. The purpose of DSOS is to elevate the standards of orthopaedic surgery and educate the public and the profession with respect to orthopaedic surgical care. As part of the commitment to educate the public, DSOS in partnership with the Christiana Care Health System Department of Orthopaedic Surgery sponsors a yearly orthopaedic symposium.
Held annually in October during Bone & Joint Month on the campus of Christiana Hospital, the Delaware Orthopaedic Symposium is the premier orthopaedic education event in Delaware. This conference features nationally and internationally known speakers in orthopaedic surgery, trauma and physical therapy. The event includes several educational tracks, a live anatomical dissection, poster presentations, a vendor area and continuing education credits.
