10th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium in the Chemical and Biological Sciences
University of Maryland, Baltimore Co., Catonsville, Maryland, 13 October 2007

Nearly 150 students from over 35 colleges on the East Coast from Connecticut to North Carolina and west to Ohio converged on the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, on Saturday, October 13, for the Tenth Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium in the Chemical and Biological Sciences. University of Delaware students did very well receiving seven first or second place awards in several Biology or Biochemistry and Molecular Biology groupings.

University of Delaware First and Second Prize Winners in the
2007 UMBC Undergraduate Research Symposium.

Front row left to right:

Krista Neal (Biology Sr. working with Dr. Daniel Simmons) received a second place in Biological Sciences for her poster presentation, “Mutational Analysis of Selected Residues in the J-Domain and Hinge Region of SV40 Large Tumor Antigen.”

Tyanna Hadley (Biochemistry and Legal Studies Jr. worked with Dr. David Clapham HHMI Investigator at Harvard Medical School) received a first place in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology for her poster presentation, "Investigation of Protein Expression in Mouse Spermatozoa.”

Ritika Samant (Biology Jr. working with Dr. Ulhas Naik) received a first place in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology for her poster presentation, “The Identification of the PZD-Domain Proteins Interacting with JAM-B.”

Tara Rhoades (Biochemistry Jr. working with Dr. John Koh) received a second place in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology for her poster presentation, “A Novel Approach to Altering Estrogen Receptor Function.”

 Back row left to right:

Andrew Harmon (Biology Sr. working with Dr. Erica Selva) received a first place in Biological Sciences for his poster presentation, “Investigating Human and Drosophila Sprinter Function.”

Kristin Nuzzio (Chemistry Jr. working with Dr. Tatyana Polenova) received a second place in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology for her poster presentation, “Isolation and Purification of Vanadium Haloperoxidase Mutants for Characterization by 51V Solid-State NMR.”

Tyler Bazzoli (Chemistry Soph. working with Dr. Steven Brown) received a first place in Biological Sciences for his poster presentation, “Identifying Biomarkers of the MHC Gene to Investigate Chemosensory Discrimination.”
