Intergenerational Impact of Trauma As Seen in American Literature

This 2-3 week unit, 90 minute block scheduled, eleventh grade English curriculum unit focuses on students exploring the American Dream as seen through American Literature. The overarching lens will be through intergenerational trauma as experienced in marginalized ethnic groups, in particular African Americans. The students will explore the conflicts and themes via literary texts such as Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun and informative texts focusing on trauma and the impact on these groups. Students will use various strategies such as close reading, interactive texts, and blended learning to explore and analyze these themes. By the conclusion of the unit, students will be well-versed in not only the idea of trauma but also the impact it can have on the lives of not only the individuals experience, but also the generations to come.
