Confronting Life’s Traumatic Experiences through Literature

Dr. Varneka S. Baynard, EdD.

This curriculum unit is designed to teach upper elementary student how to use a growth mindset to overcome trauma. Children who develop trauma from the loss of a biological parent can experience life-long adverse effects. The six-week book study will help the students relate to the book’s main characters and identify ways that the characters converted their fixed mindset to a growth mindset in order to overcome their traumatic life event. Students will learn the importance of a growth mindset and the positive effect that a growth mindset has on their academic and social outcomes. This unit is developed for 3rd to 5th grade students. The Language Arts Reading Strategies used in this unit will coincide with the stills used in the Christina School District ELA curriculum.
