Harold B. White, Professor of Biochemistry, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, joined the faculty in 1971 after doctoral and postdoctoral work at Brandeis and Harvard Universities, respectively. In addition to the graduate students he has supervised, Professor White has shared his interest in intermediary metabolism and the structure, function, and evolution of vitamin-binding proteins with over 70 undergraduate research students, many of whom have become coauthors on publications from his laboratory. He received an NIH Research Career Development Award and is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Molecular Evolution. Although always interested in "teaching," his focus has shifted to "learning." As Principal Investigator on an NSF-DUE funded grant, "Problem-Based Learning in introductory Science Across Disciplines," Professor White and his CoPI's have become national leaders in adapting "PBL" to undergraduate science education. He serves on the Educational Resources Task Force of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and is Chair of the Education Committee of the American Entomological Society. The later reflects his long-standing avocational interest in dragonflies, an interest that initiated his career in science and partially motivates his visits to K-12 classrooms.
