Scherr, a native of Owings Mills, Md., was among just 10 NCAA Division I senior selected to the teams, which were chosen by a nationwide vote of coaches, media and fans.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award has grown into the nation's premier tribute to college seniors. The award identifies personal qualities that define a complete student-athlete, with criteria including excellence in the classroom, character in the community and performance on the field.
Lowes Senior Class Award winner Mike Leveille of Syracuse University highlighted the first team, and was joined by Craig Massie of Army, Paul Rabil of Johns Hopkins, Brad Ross of Duke and Ben Rubeor of Virginia.
Scherr, the only goalkeeper selected, was joined on the second team by Michael Corbolotti and Danny Nathan of Cornell, Fletcher Gregory of North Carolina and Pat Grimm of Yale.
A UD co-captain and team Sportsmanship Award winner, Scherr earned second team All-Colonial Athletic Association honors and was named to the CAA All-Tournament team for the third straight year this spring. Also, he was a Dean's List student and earned his degree with honors in chemical engineering with a minor in mathematical sciences in May. He plans to continue his education in medical school.
A three-year starter in goal for the Blue Hens, Scherr posted 576 career saves to rank fourth all-time at UD and his career goals allowed per game average of 8.52 is a Delaware career record. He led the Blue Hens to a record of 9-7 in 2008 as he ranked among the CAA leaders with a 9.36 goals allowed average and posted 205 saves for a .584 percentage.
As a junior in 2007, he started all 19 games and played a pivotal role in leading Delaware to a 13-6 record, the CAA championship and a berth in the NCAA national semifinals.
