Dan Richardson
9:51 a.m., June 9, 2008--University of Delaware seniors Dan Richardson and Mike McGuire were both selected on the final day of the Major League Baseball draft.

The two right-handed pitchers joined junior infielder Alex Buchholz as draft selections. Delaware has now had at least two players taken in each of the last three drafts.

Richardson, a senior from Bear, Del., was picked in the 38th round by the St. Louis Cardinals. As a senior, he made 13 appearances, including seven starts, while posting a 4.97 earned run average and striking out 28 batters in 41.2 innings of work.

The 2008 recipient of the team sportsmanship award, Richardson finished his career with a 2-1 record to go along with 35 strikeouts in 52.1 innings. The former Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America selection, who also played outfield his first three seasons for the Blue Hens, hit .287 with 16 home runs and 29 stolen bases in 115 games.

Mike McGuire
McGuire, a senior from Swarthmore, Pa., was drafted in the 43rd round by the Cleveland Indians. He was also picked in the 46th round of last year's draft by the Cincinnati Reds but opted to return for his senior season. He is the first Blue Hen to get selected twice since Kris Dufner was taken in the 2002 and 2003 drafts.

During the 2008 campaign, McGuire led the Blue Hens with six wins, 71 strikeouts and 76.2 innings pitched. Over his career, he posted a 16-12 record and currently stands ninth all-time in program history with 210 strikeouts. A Colonial Athletic Association All-Rookie pick in 2005, he also garnered All-Tournament honors in 2007 when he fired 8.1 innings of no-hit ball against top-seeded Old Dominion University in the championship semifinals.
