Junior to represent sorority at congressional hearings
4:32 p.m., March 14, 2007--Junior Brittany Johnson, UD Panhellenic Council president and a member of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority on campus, has been selected to represent her national sorority at the 2007 Greek Congressional Visits and Conference April 14-17 in Washington, D.C. Johnson and 79 other fraternity and sorority representatives will lobby for pro-Greek legislation on Capitol Hill. They will attend 350 meetings to support the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act, the College Fire Prevention Act and to increase the maximum amount of Pell grants, or federal student aid, for eligible students. Each national chapter is allowed two representatives at the hearings, Johnson said, so she was overwhelmed when she heard she was selected. “I was very thankful and honored,” Johnson said. “They said there were only 80 in the country going, so it's a prestigious honor. I was shocked they picked me.” Johnson will undergo training for two days before the hearings to learn about the process and how to efficiently lobby. Upon her return to UD, Johnson said she will share her experience at a Panhellenic meeting and will write a letter to UD President David P. Roselle outlining a plan of action. Johnson said the East Coast director of Alpha Xi Delta selected her to represent the sorority at the hearings because of her leadership position with UD's Panhellenic Council, a position an Alpha Xi Delta member can only have every nine years. As Panhellenic Council president, Johnson acts as a liaison between sororities and the Greek community, works with the Interfraternity Council and Greek Council, and meets with campus student leaders. Johnson said she is eager to do what she can to advance and promote the Greek system. “I hope I can meet people as passionate as I am about improving Greek life throughout the country and maximizing opportunities,” she said. “Greek life gets a bad rap sometimes, and I want to prove those stereotypes wrong.” Article by Julia Parmley, AS '07 |
