Crew team raises funds with 'Erg-a-thon' 5:24 p.m., March 6, 2007--The UD men's crew club team held a fundraiser Feb. 24 in the Perkins Student Center to aid with the purchase of eight new erg machines, Concept 2 Model D Ergometers, with the remainder of the money going towards operating costs for the spring racing season. The term "erg" refers to a unit of energy and mechanical work measured by ergometers, which are indoor rowing machines. The fundraiser was organized by crewmember junior Shawn Duff. This was the second year the team has done this fundraiser, and they plan to hold it again next year because of the great success they had with it. “Our goal was to double the amount we raised last year and raise $4,000. Our team members really stepped it up, and we are expecting about $6,000. We definitely exceeded our goal,” Duff said. Sixty-five team members participated in the erg-a-thon, each rowing for 15-minute shifts throughout the day. Awards were given to the top fundraisers: junior Max Cavanaugh, junior Pete Seymour, sophomore Cory Wesselman and sophomore Steve Norman. Awards also went to team members who rowed the most meters in their respective categories:
The team trains on the rowing machines six days a week during the winter to prepare for the spring racing season, which begins on March 10 against Lehigh University and Drexel University in Philadelphia.
