Men's ice hockey club in national semi-finals
4:36 p.m., March 1, 2007--The No. 12-ranked University of Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens Men's Ice Hockey Club team continued to heat up the action in the American Collegiate Hockey Association Men's Division I National Tournament by defeating No. 4 ranked University of Rhode Island 4-3 in the quarter-finals at Youngstown, Ohio, on Thursday morning, March 1. Kari Marttinen, who led UD scorers with a pair of goals, opened the game's scoring with 16:24 left in the first period. Alex Belknap put the Hens up 2-0 on a goal with 10:29 left in the first period. Marttinen added his second goal, a solo effort, with 14:08 left in the second period. Mike Gardner capped the scoring and broke a 3-3 deadlock in the third period, scoring what proved to be the winning goal with 6:43 remaining. Assists for the Fightin' Blue Hens were by Gardner, Marttinen, Kevin Neeld and Justin Sexton. Cory Manley scored a pair of goals for the Rams and Ben Herring added a goal for Rhode Island in the first period. Earlier this year, the Blue Hens knocked the 2006 national champion Rhode Island team from its No. 1 ranking. The Blue Hens get the day off tomorrow, Friday, March 2, and return to action in semi-final play on Saturday. The championship game is set for 4 p.m., Sunday, March 4.
