CAA hoop tournament tips off Thursday at UD

5:17 p.m., March 5, 2007--The University of Delaware is preparing to host its first Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) women's basketball championship tournament. The playoffs will tip off Thursday, March 8, and continue through the championship game at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 11, at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The CAA women's tournament will open Thursday, March 8, with No. 8 seed Georgia State University meeting No. 9 Drexel University at noon. That will be followed by No. 5 College of William & Mary against No. 12 George Mason University at 2:30, No. 6 Virginia Commonwealth University against No. 11 Northeastern University at 5 p.m., and No. 7 Towson University against No. 10 University of North Carolina Wilmington at 7:30 p.m.

UD is the No. 3 seed and has an opening round bye, along with No. 1 seed Old Dominion University, No. 2 James Madison University and No. 4 Hofstra University.

In Friday's quarterfinals, Old Dominion will meet the winner of the Georgia State-Drexel game at noon, Hofstra will meet the winner of the William & Mary-George Mason game at 2:30 p.m., the Hens will meet the winner of the Virginia Commonwealth-Northeastern game at 5 p.m., and James Madison will meet the winner of the Towson-UNC Wilmington game at 7:30 p.m.

The semifinals are set for noon and 2:30 p.m., Saturday, March 10, with the championship game at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 11.

The Fightin' Blue Hens finished the season 25-4 overall and 16-2 in the conference under Head Coach Tina Martin. They feature standout senior guard Tyresa Smith, forward Chrissy Fisher and point guard Alena Koshansky.

Old Dominion, which has won every CAA women's title since 1992, finished 21-8 overall and 17-1 in the conference, while James Madison finished 25-4 overall and 16-2 in the conference, including a loss to UD in Newark. Hofstra finished 23-6 overall and 13-5 in the conference.
UD student tickets are $6 per student per session. A session includes admission to all games played that day. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the box office in the Trabant University Center or the Bob Carpenter Center. Tickets also will be available at the Bob Carpenter Center on game days.

UD students are encouraged to wear their Cockpit T-shirts and yellow spirit wigs to Hen games. The T-shirts will be available on a first-come, first-served basis from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday, March 6, and Wednesday, March 7, at kiosks at the Trabant University Center.

For the general public, tickets can be purchased through the box offices of CAA member institutions, by calling the University of Delaware box office at (302) 831-2257, or by logging on to [www.ticketmaster.com]. Tickets cost $35 per book, which includes all 11 games. Cost per session is $13 for adults.

All 11 games of the CAA women's basketball championship will be available via various multimedia platforms. Thursday's first-round games and Friday's quarterfinal contests will be web streamed on [www.caasports.com].

Comcast CN8 and other CAA television affiliates will televise both semifinal games on Saturday. The semifinals can also be viewed on the Internet at [www.cn8.tv]. Comcast SportsNet will televise the CAA championship game on Sunday afternoon.
