James Swasey wins AHS teaching award

James Swasey, professor emeritus of plant and soil sciences at UD

1:52 p.m., June 5, 2006--James Swasey, professor emeritus of plant and soil sciences at UD, was one of 12 outstanding members of the horticultural community honored by the American Horticultural Society (AHS) during its Great American Gardeners Awards Ceremony on June 2 in Alexandria, Va. Swasey is this year's recipient of the organization's teaching award, which is given to “an individual whose ability to share his/her knowledge of horticulture with others has contributed to a better public understanding of the plant world and its impact on people.”

Swasey, who came to UD in 1984 from the University of Maine, retired as coordinator of the Longwood Graduate Program in Public Horticulture in 2005. UD's Longwood program trains professional managers and leaders in public horticulture for careers in garden management, curatorship, education and design. The program is a cooperative effort between the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and Longwood Gardens, the internationally acclaimed horticultural display garden near Kennett Square, Pa.

Swasey served as the faculty adviser to the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity chapter at the University of Delaware for nearly seven years. Upon his retirement, the local chapter established the James E. Swasey Scholarship for incoming freshmen.

Founded in 1922, AHS is an educational, nonprofit organization that recognizes and promotes best practices in American horticulture. For more information, visit [www.ahs.org].
