UD graduate Ruggiero joins Elon football staff

Warren Ruggiero
1:40 p.m., Jan. 4, 2006--Warren Ruggiero, a University of Delaware graduate and former member of the Fightin’ Blue Hens football team, has been named offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Elon University.

Ruggiero, 39, joins the Elon staff after four years as offensive coordinator at Hofstra University. He joins a staff being assembled by Pete Lembo, who recently resigned as head coach at Lehigh University.

Ruggiero played quarterback at UD during the Rich Gannon era under College Football Hall of Fame coach Harold R. “Tubby” Raymond and his first coaching position was as a graduate assistant for the Hens during the 1988 season.

The Glen Rock, N.J., native earned a bachelor of science degree in physical education and philosophy in 1988 and a master of science degree in physical education and health in 1992 from UD.

After leaving the UD staff, Ruggiero was offensive coordinator at Defiance College from 1989-93 and at Clarion University from 1994-96. He spent two seasons, 1997-98, as head coach at Glenville (W.Va.) State College, which he led to the NCAA Division II playoffs.

Ruggiero served on the staff at the College of William & Mary in 1999 and then joined Hofstra, under head coach Joe Gardi.

Gardi retired following the 2005 season and was replaced by UD defensive coordinator Dave Cohen.
