Blue Hen baseball team routs Delaware State

UD’s Dan Richardson had four hits, five runs batted in and three runs scored in Tuesday’s victory over Delaware State.

8:54 a.m., April 19, 2006--The hot-hitting University of Delaware baseball team defeated host Delaware State University 18-7 on Tuesday night at Schutte Park in Dover.

The Fightin' Blue Hens had a season-high 21 hits, including a three-run homer by freshman second baseman Alex Buchholz in the second that staked UD to a 5-0 lead. Buchholz and outfielder Dan Richardson, who hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning, both finished with five runs batted in.

Also smacking home runs for the Hens were outfielders Bryan Hagerich and Brandon Menchaca.

Richardson had a team-leading four hits, and Menchaca, Ryan Jablonski and Ryan Engelhardt had three each.

Evan Bowen (1-1) was the starting pitcher for the Hens and worked three and two-thirds innings for the win. Chad Kerfoot and Tom Price were strong in relief, with Kerfoot striking out eight batters.

With the win, UD improved to 21-13 on the season. The Hens will return to action with a game against Wilmington College at 3 p.m., Wednesday, April 19, at Bob Hannah Stadium. They will then host nationally ranked Colonial Athletic Association rival Old Dominion University in a three-game weekend series.

Notes: UD infielder Todd Davison and Buchholz earned CAA weekly honors, with Davison named the conference player of the week and Buchholz named the rookie of the week.
