Parental concerns addressed at seminars

4:22 p.m., Aug. 31, 2005--A series of seminars offered by Residence Life to parents of incoming freshmen, Saturday, Aug. 27, helped to ease the usual jitters associated with letting go.

The programs, featuring Residence Life, Public Safety and Faciliities representatives, gave parents a chance to ask questions and gain insight into UD’s residence hall resources and procedures, as well as safety policies and maintenance and custodial concerns.

Held in the common areas of assigned residence halls during the afternoon of move-in day, the seminars began with a brief introduction and run-down of residence hall ground rules by resident assistants, and were followed by presentations by members of UD’s Public Safety team.

“Parents of freshmen often have concerns about their student’s safety,” Cpl. Diana Palladino, a police specialist with UD’s Department of Public Safety, said, “and these seminars, which we participate in each year on move-in weekend, address those concerns.

"We explain how the dorms are secure 24/7, talk about the room key policy and discuss all the extra safety precautions parents can advise their students to take, such as requesting that they program their cell phones with 911 and an emergency contact number, as well."
