Davis gets interception as New York Jets win

Mondoe Davis
9:31 a.m., Aug. 16, 2005--Former University of Delaware standout Mondoe Davis had an outstanding game on special teams and snared an interception while playing linebacker for the New York Jets in a 10-3 preseason victory over the Detroit Lions last Friday, Aug. 12.

Davis, who also had two tackles in the game, was singled out by Jets Head Coach Herman Edwards. "He's a tough guy. Fast. Smart," Edwards told the Newark (N.J.) Star-Ledger in a profile on the former Fightin’ Blue Hen. "He did a great job on special teams and made the big play on the tipped ball. He likes football. Has great energy. Asks great questions. You like those kind of guys."

"It was like a dream come true," Davis, who was signed by the Jets as an undrafted free agent, told the newspaper. "I was elated. It was a great atmosphere. I've been watching the NFL on television ever since I was a little kid. To be out there for the first time, it was just an awesome feeling. I had a lot of fun."

Davis is one of two former UD players on the Jets’ roster, joining offensive lineman Jason Nerys, who is listed as the backup right guard on the team’s depth chart.

In other National Football League preseason games this week, former Hen quarterback Andy Hall competed three of seven passes for 104 yards and led the Philadelphia Eagles into the end zone in a 38-31 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday night. Hall’s biggest play was a 67-yard pass to wide receiver Chris Samp. He also had one carry for five yards.

Former UD wide receiver Jamin Elliott caught one pass for 23 yards as the Washington Redskins lost 28-10 to the Carolina Panthers and former running back Keith Burnell carried one time for one yard as the Baltimore Ravens fell 16-3 to the Atlanta Falcons.

Mike Adams, former UD team captain and defensive back, has earned a shot at the nickel back position for the San Francisco 49ers. He saw action with the second team defensive unit in San Francisco’s 21-13 victory over the Oakland Raiders.

Two former UD defensive linemen, Joe Minucci and Shawn Johnson, are playing with the Tennessee Titans, who fell 20-17 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. On the team depth chart, Minucci is listed as third team defensive tackle and Johnson, who is recovering from a shoulder injury, as third team defensive end.

Another ex-Hen, former UD defensive back Bob Slowik, is in his first year as defensive backs coach for the Denver Broncos, who defeated the Houston Texans 20-14.
