Chinese New Year celebration set Feb. 12

The traditional lion dance was performed last year at UD by volunteers from the Chinese American Community Center in Hockessin.
11:39 a.m., Jan. 27, 2005--Members of the Chinese Students and Scholars Association will usher in the year of the rooster with traditional Chinese festivities on Saturday, Feb. 12.

The celebration, which runs from 7-9:30 p.m. in Mitchell Hall, will include a kung fu demonstration by University of Delaware students, regional piano and dulcimer music, a choral performance, a Chinese opera and traditional dances.

The presentations are designed to showcase Eastern customs and increase multicultural awareness on campus.

Originally a religious ceremony, the Chinese New Year is the most important holiday in the Chinese calendar. Traditional ceremonies last 15 days and honor household gods and family ancestors, as well as the union of heaven and earth.

Individual tickets for the Feb. 12 event are $5 each, $3 each for groups of five or more. Tickets can be purchased at Mitchell Hall on the night of the festival, or in advance, by calling (302) 831-4332.
