UD employee in ATM withdrawal challenge Dec. 7

1:18 p.m., Dec. 3, 2004--Funding for Wanda Thomas’ holiday shopping is literally in her hands, actually, at her fingertips. The UD custodial worker won the latest WSFS Bank’s ATM withdrawal challenge, in which she will try to withdraw as much money as she can from an ATM in three minutes. The challenge will be held at 12:15 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 7, at the WSFS branch in the Trabant University Center.

“It’s very exciting for me,” Thomas, of Delaware City, said. “I usually never win anything. I actually put [my entry] in on the last day. I was surprised to get a call and hear that I won.”

Winners are drawn at random from entry slips submitted to the bank by customers and noncustomers, Jennifer McCollum, vice president and relationship manager at WSFS Bank, said. The challenge allows a maximum withdrawal of $250 per transaction. As part of Senior Day celebrations, Lauren Dana Leff, AS ’04, set the record May 20 when she withdrew a record $1,250 from an ATM in 2 minutes and 54 seconds.

“In an effort to introduce WSFS customers to the new "no-envelope" ATM deposit technology, the ATM contest was a way to share our excitement with the campus community,” McCollum said.

Thomas said she has been practicing for the contest by making many small withdrawals from the bank’s ATMs. “I’m a little nervous, but I’m excited,” she said. “I have it down to 25 seconds on one machine, but I’m not used to the newer ones.”

Thomas, who has two sons and four grandchildren, said the family’s holiday shopping plans depend on the speed and accuracy of her fingers.
