UD women’s lacrosse coach announces resignation
Wescott joined the UD athletics staff in 1993 as an assistant field hockey coach and began serving as lacrosse head coach one year later. Her 11-year tenure was the longest in the history of Fightin’ Blue Hens women’s lacrosse. A national search will begin immediately to find Wescott’s replacement. “This is a great University and I’ve had the chance to coach some outstanding teams,” Wescott said. “I wish them the best of luck in the future. I have the chance to explore some other coaching opportunities at the international level, and I'm excited about that.” An outstanding coach with extensive international experience, Wescott has been instrumental in teaching the game throughout the world. She has directed lacrosse camps in Japan and has served as head coach of the German National Team, which, under her direction, participated in the World Cup tournament at High Wycombe, England, in 2001. Wescott leaves UD with a record of 104-86, second only to National Lacrosse Hall of Fame coach Janet Smith, who was 118-51-1, and she won three national championships in 10 seasons with the Hens from 1980-89. Wescott led the Hens to three straight America East Conference championships in 1997, 1998 and 1999, and an NCAA Division I tournament appearance in 2000. Her teams won a school record 26 consecutive conference games in 1997-2000 and she was named the America East Coach of the Year in 1996 and 1998. A native of Moorestown, N.J., Wescott played both field hockey and lacrosse at the University of Maryland. She began her collegiate coaching career as a graduate assistant field hockey coach at Michigan State in 1980 and served as assistant field hockey and lacrosse coach at Maryland and Penn State. Wescott also served as head field hockey and head lacrosse coach at Drew University for one season in 1989-90 before moving on to Rutgers, where she served as head lacrosse coach from 1991-93.
