UD's Wagaman, Kutz named to All-Academic team

9:20 a.m., May 29, 2003--University of Delaware senior student-athletes Kim Wagaman and Lissa Kutz have been named to the Verizon College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) District II All-Academic team.

Kim Wagaman
Wagaman, a standout defender in field hockey, was named to the first team and Kutz, a key member of the UD women's rowing team, was named to the second team. Kutz was named to the team for the second straight year, having earned first team honors in 2002.

UD was one of just six schools that had more than one student-athlete honored in District II, which consists of all NCAA Division I schools in Delaware, Washington, D.C., Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. To be nominated, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a cumulative grade point index of 3.2 or higher, and be a starter or key reserve for her team.

Wagaman, a senior from Oley, Pa., was the lone field hockey player honored on either of the teams and is now eligible for the national Academic All-American ballot. She carries a 3.901 grade point average as an accounting major with a minor in management information systems and last week was honored with the Eastern College Athletic Conference Medal of Merit Award as the UD senior female letter winner with the highest grade point average.

She was a four-year standout for the Fightin’ Blue Hens and was named the team's most valuable player this past fall as a co-captain. She was part of teams that advanced to conference semifinals all four years and started each of the team's last 61 games. She posted career totals of nine goals and 15 assists.
In 2002, she was the team’s third leading scorer with three goals and nine assists and earned second team National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-Middle Atlantic Region honors, was first team All-Colonial Athletic Association, was named to the CAA All-Tournament team and was the CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year for field hockey.

Lissa Kutz
Wagaman is also a three-time member of College Field Hockey Coaches Association national All-Academic team.

Kutz, a graduate student from Reading, Pa., earned her undergraduate degree with a 3.88 grade point average last spring and is currently enrolled in the physical therapy master's program at UD. A three-year letter winner and a 2002 team co-captain, Kutz was a member of two straight unofficial Colonial Athletic Association team champion squads.

She competed in six events for the varsity eights crew during the 2003 season, placing second at the CAA Kerr Cup championships and 10th at the ECAC championships. As a member of the team's varsity eights crew in 2002, she helped the team capture the CAA title and place eighth at the Dad Vail Regatta.
