9:30 a.m., June 13, 2003--Delaware law enforcement officers ran “Gary’s Mile” down Main Street in Newark on June 6 to conclude the 160-mile annual Law Enforcement Torch Run, which began June 4 in Rehoboth Beach. The torch was presented at the opening ceremonies of the Delaware Special Olympics, June 6, in UD’s Delaware Stadium. “Gary’s Mile” honors the late Maj. Gary Summerville, a UD police officer who died in a traffic accident in 1999.

At Special Olympics, fans, friends and family cheered the more than 1,200 athletes from all over Delaware who competed in a wide range of sporting events, including tennis, softball, powerlifting, aquatics and bocce. Special Olympics Delaware provides a year-round program of quality sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with mental retardation and/or other cognitive delays.
