May 1, 2003 Howard H. Simon, 62, died Monday, April 28, at the University of Maryland Medical Center after heart surgery.
A 1963 UD graduate, Mr. Simon was inducted into the Delaware Alumni Association Wall of Fame in 1988 for outstanding professional contributions. He was further honored in 1996 by the Universitys business college as an outstanding alumnus. He also was a former member of the Advisory Board to UDs accounting department.
A founder of Simon, Master & Sidlow Certified Public Accountants, Mr. Simon was a past president of the Delaware Society of Certified Public Accountants, as well as past chairman of CPA Associates International. He was a frequent lecturer on financial and accounting matters and authored many articles on financial and accounting topics for professional journals and newspapers. In 1983 Mr. Simon was the recipient of the AICPA Public Service Award.
A past president of the Board of the Americans for Competitive Enterprise System, he served as treasurer of the Board of Trustees of the Tatnall School for 10 years and was an active board member of the Delaware Center for Horticulture and the Delaware Council on Economic Education. For the past year, Mr. Simon served as the business manager for the Delaware Council on Gambling Problems.
Mr. Simon was past president of Adas Kodesch Shel Emeth Congregation and continued to serve as a life member of its board of governors until his death. He served as vice president Delaware Region and a member of the National Board of Directors of the Jewish National Fund and was the past chair of the Delaware State Committee for Israel Bonds. He was honored with the Israel Bond Shofar Award in 1993.
He was past president of B'nai Brith, past vice president of the Jewish Community Center, co-chair of the Jewish Federation of Delaware Operation Exodus Campaign and past chair Delaware Region National Conference of Christians and Jews.
He was an active fundraiser for many worthwhile Jewish and secular causes, including the United Way of Delaware.
