UD alumni dominate Teacher of the Year selections

9:30 a.m., Dec. 17, 2002-- When Delaware’s 19 school districts chose their most outstanding teachers of 2002-03 to compete for Delaware Teacher of the Year, 18 of those chosen had ties to the University of Delaware.
  • 11 of the 19 completed either a bachelor’s or master’s degree at UD.

  • Five of the 19 completed both a bachelor’s and master’s degree at UD.

  • Seven completed courses for certification or for graduate studies.

Betty Torbert, Teacher of the Year coordinator for the Delaware Department of Education, called it remarkable. “In the last five years that I have been working with the Teacher of the Year program, many of the teachers chosen have attended the University of Delaware. But, this year is an awesome tribute to the University, since 18 out of 19 of these outstanding teachers have attended.”

Delaware Teacher of the Year Sharon Crossen

That includes Sharon Crossen, the person chosen 2003 Delaware Teacher of the Year. Crossen, an English/drama teacher for grades 9-12 at POLYTECH High School in Woodside, will represent the state in February when a national selection committee representing 14 national education organizations, selects the National Teacher of the Year. That person, who will be introduced to the nation by the president in April, will be released from classroom duties for a year to travel nationally and internationally as a spokesperson for the teaching profession.
