Blue Hen baseball team defeats Villanova

Brock Donovan

The University of Delaware baseball team erupted for 14 runs on 18 hits to defeat Villanova 14-6 at Bob Hannah Stadium on Wednesday afternoon, May 15.

It was the final game of the regular season for Delaware, which finished with a record of 34-20.

The Blue Hens broke a 3-3 tie in fourth inning when Casey Fahy led off with a single, then stole two bases to put him position to score on a sacrifice fly by Reid Gorecki. Mark Michael and John Schneider followed later that inning with back-to-back RBI doubles, and Delaware jumped out to an 8-3 advantage.

Delaware padded the lead on two-run home runs by Gorecki and Brock Donovan and a solo shot by Steve Van Note.

Van Note and Donovan had three hits each and Gorecki added a double and two stolen bases to go with his team-high 12th home run of the season. Doug Eitelman went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs batted in.

UD's Ryan Dulaney picked up his third straight victory as starter, running his record to a perfect 5-0. He went five innings, getting relief from Chris Garrick, Scott Rambo and Steve Harden. Villanova freshman Nick Allen (6-1) was saddled with his first loss of the season.

The victory was the 20th win at home for the Blue Hens this season, making it the eighth season since 1983 in which Delaware has recorded 20 or more victories at Hannah Stadium.

Delaware has secured a berth in the Colonial Athletic Association tournament, which will open Tuesday, May 21, in Manteo, N.C. Tournament seedings will be determined following weekend games.
