UD chapter honored by MS SocietyThe Delaware Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society honored UDs Assessment Clinic at its annual luncheon Nov. 6 in Wilmington. UD received the Friends of the MS Society Award from for its commitment and contributors to the Delaware chapter. According to Ken Seaman, physical therapy, he started the clinic two years ago as just a functional assessment clinic, which also involved physical therapy graduate students. It was designed to provide a unique educational experience for our students, but just as importantly to provide a free service for those with MS who otherwise would never receive such a thorough evaluation and treatment recommendation regime. Since then, the clinic has since grown to a multidisciplinary unit also involving an optometrist, speech pathologist, adaptive equipment specialist, exercise physiologist and a biochemist. It is modeled after a much larger multidisciplinary multiple sclerosis program, which Seaman has been a part of for more than 10 years. This year, the Assessment Clinic received financial assistance for participating students from the state of Delaware MS Society, which also funds any costs incurred to run the program, including space, equipment, supplies and postal expenses. To my knowledge, Seaman said, no such endeavor exists in any form, for any medical condition, in any existing physical therapy program in the country. |
