Messenger - Vol. 2, No. 3, Page 23 Summer 1993 Magnificent minerals Recently donated to the University of Delaware Mineralogical Museum by A.B. Stiles of Wilmington, Del., this slice of rhodochrosite shows a remarkable variety of forms and intensity of color. According to curator Peter B. Leavens, professor of geology, the specimen is unusual in that it is a complete section of a stalactite, rather than a fragment. A "magnificent" 11-inch aquamarine also was donated to the museum this year by David Byers of Allendale, N.J. Located in the Irenee du Pont Mineral Room of Penny Hall on Academy Street, Newark campus, the museum houses "the finest, small mineral display in the world," according to Leavens. The museum is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the week, and special tours can be arranged by calling Leavens at (302) 831-8106.
