Latin American Studies
Alumni Corner

“The Latin American Studies’ program at the University of Delaware contributed significantly to my success in pursuing a career in Foreign Affairs. Completing the program for a minor in Latin American Studies, with its mix of history, geography, Spanish, anthropology and political science course requirements, gave me an excellent background on Latin America that I am able to draw from in my current position as a Colombia analyst at the Department of State. Likewise, the program’s faculty continually encouraged me to pursue both independent study and study abroad programs which greatly contributed to my knowledge of the hemisphere. Having this background in Latin American Studies, as well as Spanish language skills, helped me to successfully complete American University’s masters degree program in international studies and ultimately gave me the advantage I needed to get my foot in the door to begin a career working on the region at the Department of State.”

My B.A. major in Latin American Studies has proven to be an invaluable component in fulfilling my professional goals.  From engaging in constructive language training to learning Latin American history, geography, politics and culture, the interdisciplinary program thoroughly prepared me for life beyond college.  The need for professionals that are familiar with the Latin American region is essential in today's world, and I have taken advantage of various career opportunities. My major assisted me in pursuing my subsequent Master's degree in International Development at the University of Pittsburgh , where I received a full academic scholarship from the Center for Latin American Studies.   Similarly, I have utilized my major to complete internships with the U.S. Department of State and the World Bank in South America .  I have also served as a research assistant for various Latin American publications, including a renowned professor's United Nations publication on Latin American health sector reforms in Latin America .  Additionally, several of my articles on Latin American topics have been published in professional journals.  These experiences have derived from my Latin American Studies major, and as a result of my endeavors, I am currently working as an analyst for the U.S. Department of State in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs.  It is without a doubt that I can state that my B.A. in Latin American Studies has assisted me in accomplishing my professional goals.
