Waving a banner
of "democracy" but brandishing a club of "dictatorship," Roosevelt
is a demon sitting atop the "Grieving Statue of Liberty" in Ono Saseo's
January 1942 cartoon. Roosevelt is joined by other Japanese stereotypes
of American culture: a debauched "antiwar" sailor, "military action"
as a bound (and thus inactive) woman, a striking worker, and a buffonish
"Jew" inflating a ballon of profits in the shape of an American flag.
