The
Foreign Settlement at Yokohama, 1861
As Yokohama
grew, it grew into two halves: Japanese living in the western section
(top right) and foreigners living in the concession territory in the
eastern section (lower center left). This vast aerial view by Hashimoto
clearly shows the divide leading from the west jetty straight back to
Miyozaki, the pleasure quarters where Japanese and foreign residents
mingled. The broad avenue running east-west is Honchô dori, or
Main Street. The conspicuous white two-story building just off the east
jetty was the Yokohama branch of the famed Hong Kong-based English mercantile
house Jardine, Matheson and Company. To view details of foreign life
