As Main Street (Honchô dori) crossed into the Japanese side of town it turned into a row of curio shops, thus the nickname for this stretch of road: Curio Street. Products ranged from ceramic bowls to bronze sculptures. Silk and tea were the main items foreigners exported from Japan at the time, but other things were destined for overseas as well. Here two foreign gentlemen are being shown lacquerware by the Japanese proprietor of this shop. |
