Spring Break Student Day
Amy Sebring, Moderator
The Third EIIP Virtual Forum Annual Spring Break Student Day was held in the EIIP Virtual Classroom on March 14, 2001. The March session coincides with National American Red Cross Month. The Red Cross is co-sponsoring FEMA Project Impact Spring Break projects in communities across the country. Spring Break is a nationwide effort that brings volunteers together in local Project Impact communities to engage in various disaster prevention and damage reduction service projects. This initiative also teaches about other opportunities provided through the Red Cross Youth Services program.
Speakers for the Spring Break session were Jane Sibley Associate, Program Development, Mitigation and Community Disaster Education, American Red Cross National Headquarters, and Christy Brown, FEMA Spring Break Coordinator.
Jane Sibley is the Associate, Program Development, Mitigation and Community Disaster Education at the American Red Cross national headquarters. In this position, she is responsible for providing Red Cross chapters throughout the U.S. with the developmental and technical assistance that they need to develop and implement viable Mitigation and Community Disaster Education initiatives and programs that help to make the public safer from natural hazards. Jane also serves as a liaison and coordinates ongoing projects and initiatives with staff representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and other organizations. One of her projects with FEMA includes assisting chapters with their participation in Project Impact Spring Break.
She is a graduate of the College of William and Mary where she received a degree in public policy. Prior to joining the Red Cross, she worked for ICF Consulting, a Fairfax, Virginia based consulting firm for three years. During her time there she assisted eleven communities in Florida with developing local mitigation strategies, as well as, reviewing state-level mitigation plans and proposed legislation. At the national level, Jane provided staff support to the National Response Team, a federal interagency group that coordinates national responses to natural and technological hazards. In addition, she worked with FEMA staff to develop Public Assistance Post-Disaster Survey Reports.
