Communication Between Researchers and Practitioners

Adele Chiesa
Head of the Learning Resource Center
National Emergency Training Center

Roger Pielke, Jr.,
Scientist
Environmental and Societal Impacts Group
National Center for Atmospheric Research
Boulder, Colorado

EIIP Moderator: Amy Sebring

The session in the EIIP Virtual Library was an outgrowth of a suggestion made during a recent Round Table session. A study on communication between researchers and practitioners was conducted in connection with the Second Assessment and it confirms the perception that there is a lack of communication between both groups. The session explored this issue with input from both the research and practitioner perspective with extremely good observations made during the dialogue.

The Forum hosted two very knowledgeable individuals for the discussion:
· Adele Chiesa, Chief of the Learning Resource Center at the National Emergency Training Center, Emmitsburg, MD: Adele has worked as Librarian with FEMA, the USFA, and the LRC for 23 years, and assists practitioners with requests for information and resources.
· Roger Pielke, Jr., Scientist, Environmental and Societal Impacts Group, National Center for Atmospheric Research, Boulder, Colorado. Roger's research focuses on the relation of scientific information and public and private sector decision-making.

See the August 4, 1999 transcript in the EIIP Virtual Forum for the entire discussion and Q&A with the audience.
