About John Cormack
About the IT Directorate
EIIP Tech Arena Online Presentation
The April 28, 1999 EIIP Tech Arena featured John Cormack, Computer Specialist, FEMA Information Technology Services Directorate. John presented an overview of the National Emergency Management Information System (NEMIS); John has been involved with the development of NEMIS since 1995.
As explained by John, NEMIS is the way that FEMA is processing disasters today as a means of improving the delivery of services to disaster victims by using Information Technologies to improve the functioning of Federal programs with State partners.
NEMIS is a nationwide distributed system extending to the States and territories through the 10 FEMA Regional Offices. States access NEMIS through direct connection to FEMA Regional offices, modem, or the World Wide Web (under development). John covered the 6 Modules of NEMIS and demonstrated the system with a number of slides displayed as URLs.
John began his IT career in the 1970's when he was the Western Regional Manager for a national chain of retail stores and given the responsibility to oversee the development of a company-wide Management Information System. He later joined Computer Sciences Corporation as a National Account Manager for CSC clients like the Department of Energy, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and Environmental Protection Agency.
He entered Federal service with the General Services Administration where he was responsible for assisting in the development of the Federal Information Resources Management Regulations, and reviewing and assessing Federal Agencies' compliance with those regulations.
He joined FEMA in 1989, the Monday after Hurricane Hugo, and hasn't been able to slow down yet. He has been involved in all aspects of management and development of major information systems for FEMA. He is currently assigned to the Office of the Executive Associate Director of the Information Technology Services Directorate of FEMA. He has been involved in the NEMIS development project since its inception in 1995.
