Avagene Moore:to tell us about her International Development Commmittee. Here's Janet.\ Avagene Moore:Hello folks, This is Janet. Just wanted to pass on that things are going well from the conference.... Avagene Moore:It has been particularly exciting to have registrants at this year's conference from the Netherlands, Sweden, the U.K., Italy, and Canada.... Avagene Moore:In addition we have enjoyed several presentations from international speakers.... Avagene Moore:This bodes well for our first year as an "International" organization.... Avagene Moore:Particularly pleasing to me as the International Development Chair for IAEM. Avagene Moore:This is Avagene again. Does anyone have anything to ask of Janet? Amy Sebring:Janet did you have a committee meeting here at the conference? Avagene Moore:Chris Adams is going to his room to try to login with his own computer. Warren J Vaughn:What have some of their presentations been about? Avagene Moore:Yes Amy... We have been working this year to draft a short and long time strategy for how we can help bridge IAEM's move and name change and help serve present and future international members. Avagene Moore:Warren, we have had presentations about the ice storms in Canada, a case study of a hazmat recyling plant fire in Canada..... Avagene Moore:and as we speak a speaker from the U.K. speaking on the logistics for Princess Diana's funeral....hope I can't catch some of that from Inspector Ed Ashwell. (this is Janet) Avagene Moore:Please read "can't" as "can" opps - Janet Avagene Moore:This is Avagene again. Libbi Rucker Reed:janet, are you just making suggestions at this conf re: strategies or actually deciding on them Avagene Moore:Well, Libbi..., Our committee has been deciding on things we can do as a committee, for example hosting international forums on the EIIP, etc. but in larger policy issues would go to the board. - Janet Libbi Rucker Reed:ok.... Avagene Moore:Amy, have you told our audience about the video work we did here at the conference? Amy Sebring:Yes, a little at the beginning. Amy Sebring:We have been trying out a video connection.... Avagene Moore:Well, I hope everyone is excited about that. Amy Sebring:between some of the presentations and the Cyber Cafe. Libbi Rucker Reed:Amy, what is the cyber cafe? Amy Sebring:It is just a room with computers set up.. Warren J Vaughn:Sounds like you all have the neatest toys Amy Sebring:we had Internet connections, but just as we were getting ready...] Amy Sebring:to do this chat, they turned the phones off so we had to hustle to regroup! Amy Sebring:Avagene, I would like to mention... Amy Sebring:that we have also had the opportunity to meet.. Amy Sebring:some of our former presenters live and in person here. Amy Sebring:Remeber Albert Slap with PlantSafe, he is here... Amy Sebring:as is Jim Bowen with SitRep2200. Avagene Moore:(good idea, Amy) Amy Sebring:Also we are recruiting some upcoming presentations hopefully. Amy Sebring:As well as new partners. Libbi Rucker Reed:sitrep 2200??? Something new? Amy Sebring:It's on the Technology page Libbi... Avagene Moore:We have recruited several new Partners and tutored them in using the Virtual Forum. Amy Sebring:under Live Chat link. Libbi Rucker Reed:Thanks.... Amy Sebring:Avagene, is Doug still with you and would he like to say a few words? Avagene Moore:All my conference participants have run off to catch the Princess Di session.] Avagene Moore:Have we heard from Randy again? Amy Sebring:oh dear...did not see Chris log in. Amy Sebring:Let's get back to Randy... Warren J Vaughn:Avagene have you seen Bill Lent yet? Isabel McCurdy:Are these sessions recorded? Amy Sebring:still with us Randy? Amy Sebring:(No Isabel) Avagene Moore:Yes, in fact, Bill was one of the presenters we videoed yesterday. Randall Duncan:Yes, I'm here..l. Randall Duncan:As most of you know... Randall Duncan:I was not able to make the conference... Randall Duncan:due to flooding in my jurisdiction... Randall Duncan:We have received a Presidential declaration for Individual Assistance... Randall Duncan:and are today working on a Public Assistance declaration.... Randall Duncan:Earlier I was answering questions from the local newspaper editor... Randall Duncan:about the flood, which appears as though it will set a new record... Randall Duncan:in all the towns in my county for flooding! Randall Duncan:We relocated about 3,000 people in one of the towns, and several hundred in the other. Randall Duncan:We have about 479 structures involved in the flood.... Randall Duncan:With no estimate of damages, yet... Randall Duncan:Another town in the county just to my north was hit much harder... Randall Duncan:Their levy breached, and they had over 560 structures involved in the flood... Randall Duncan:and over 100 businesses -- which goes to show the importance.... Randall Duncan:of continuity planning for private enterprise. Those businesses will have to ... Randall Duncan:know how to resume business now. Warren J Vaughn:Randy are you using the SDS or EIS software in your area to keep track of all this? Randall Duncan:At the current time, Warren, we are not using either one.... Randall Duncan:Our EOC locations are not that high tech, unfortunately. Isabel McCurdy:What is SDS and EIS, Warren? Warren J Vaughn:This will be a good opportunity to push that now. Randall Duncan:YOU BET! Amy Sebring:Randy I heard you had an airplane crash also? Randall Duncan:Yes, Amy. On top of the flood, we had a 10-passanger Mitsubishi aircraft crash... Warren J Vaughn:They are software packages that use networking to track resources and collect information Randall Duncan:in the northern part of our county, and last night... Randall Duncan:we had a severe thunderstorm warning with what appears to have been a... Randall Duncan:possible F-0 tornado and some property damage... Randall Duncan:I am awaiting word of the arrival of the locusts! Avagene Moore:Randy, so sorry for your troubles there. You are missed at the IAEM Conference. Warren J Vaughn:We are getting that storm lone running thru TN at this time. Some tornados reported around herer Libbi Rucker Reed:Boy, Randy, you REALLY have had it lately. Amy Sebring:Yes, any words you would like us to pass on to the attendees tonight? Amy Sebring:at the Presidential banquet! Warren J Vaughn:lone is LINE and herer is HERE Randall Duncan:All I wanted to do was to pass my gavel to Bill. Is that so large a thing to want (I am asking that humourously)? Amy Sebring:Wish we had already had you hooked up into video Randy. Avagene Moore:Some words of wisdom perhaps? Randall Duncan:I hope each member attending the banquet... Randall Duncan:Will realize the importance of our profession... Randall Duncan:to their local government jurisdiction, military unit or business... Randall Duncan:and remember that all the travel and training we do... Randall Duncan:is for the purpose of protecting and helping those we have responsibility for... Randall Duncan:when the times get tough, and the disasters happen. That's what I'm doing in my... Randall Duncan:jurisdiction, and that's what any of you would do under the same circumstances... Randall Duncan:The best of luck to all, and again, I regret not being there in person. Thank you. Warren J Vaughn:<-- golf clap from the cheap seats Amy Sebring:Randy, we know you are extremely busy... Amy Sebring:thank you very much for taking the time to be with us... Amy Sebring:and we will pass on those words tonight. Avagene Moore:Yes, thanks so much Randy. Amy Sebring:As Avagene said, you have been greatly missed here. Randall Duncan:Thanks to all of you, too. While I'm not there physically, I am there in spirit with you all! Avagene Moore:One thing I want you read when you can, Randy ... Avagene Moore:The summary of the second assessment that Dr Dennis Milletti, Univ of CO spoke about this morning. Wonderful presentation. Warren J Vaughn:Avagene, isn't Bill Appleby taking over as President ? Avagene Moore:Opened up our thinking hopefully. Yes, he is. Randall Duncan:I know he is very interested in our field, and a well thought of researcher. I'll be sure to track the information down. Avagene Moore:Any other comments, Randy? Avagene Moore:Any quick questions of Randy? Randall Duncan:Not for the time being. Thanks for the opportunity to visit. And, I hope the weather there is great! Bye! Rick Tobin:Dennis is always interesting...sometimes controversial, which is good. Avagene Moore:Bye, thank you. Amy Sebring:Speaking of floods ... Avagene Moore:I think what Dr Milletti said was what people need to hear and wake us all up. Avagene Moore:(sorry Amy) Amy Sebring:Sorry Ava, would you like to summarize what he said Ava? chip hines:Ava: Do you have a quick synopsis of what was said for us poor homebound souls? Avagene Moore:There isn't much way to summarize it except to say that much of what we are doing are short term measures that will very possibly be tomorrows hazards. Avagene Moore:I was impressed. Avagene Moore:We are having more and more disasters and yet allowing people to do things and live in high risk areas. Rick Tobin:Did you hear Craig Fugate's remarks on C- Span a month ago...very agressive and right on target. Avagene Moore:If we are smart, we will stops some of that. we will have to get some Virtual Forum discussions going. ... Amy Sebring:Chip, can you tell us anything about Director Witt's speech today? Avagene Moore:around some of these visionary subjects. David Crews:The reason there are more disasters is that more people are placing thermselves in harms way. That happened here during the current flooding in our county. Many of the areas affected were in the flood plains! Amy Sebring:I would like to mention that I attended a good session this morning... Amy Sebring:on the topic of flooding by the NWS and ... Amy Sebring:picked up some info I would like to pass on... Amy Sebring:also maybe do a future session... Libbi Rucker Reed:Appears that maybe county commissions need to appoint/select emergency managers to assist with planning & zoning issues. Amy Sebring:It is a prototype called the Advanced Hydrologic Prediction System.. Amy Sebring:which is being tested in Des Moines Iowa... Amy Sebring:see web address ... Amy Sebring:http://www.crh.noaa.gov/dmx/ahps Amy Sebring:I think I got that right Amy Sebring:this is a test situation... Amy Sebring:and they (NWS) are looking for some feedback on it... chip hines:Amy: the Director spoke at the National Press Club Luncheon today. Althogh I wasnt there, he did address Project Impact, and the approach to reduce the effects of disasters. Amy Sebring:from the emergency management community. Amy Sebring:Thanks Chip. Amy Sebring:Also, we have a live broadcast... Amy Sebring:going on from EENET over internet which is just wrapping up also. Amy Sebring:We tuned in earlier, and the quality was excellent. Amy Sebring:At least the video quality! Avagene Moore:(Amy, the URL was correct.) Amy Sebring:(ok, I am done now, thanks) David Crews:Prediction is great but Mitigation is even better. Our county allowed building in flood plains by allowing the elevation of homes by 1 foor! Amy Sebring:1 foor oh my! David Crews:sorry foot! Amy Sebring:(hee hee) Amy Sebring:Yes, they spoke about building right up to.. Amy Sebring:the 100 year floodplain line also David. Rick Tobin:1 foor = 12 nches chip hines:The Director's speech addressed the same issues that Ava was referring to earlier... reducing losses through prevention, preparedness, and by taking specific actions towards reducing ... chip hines:repetative losses. Amy Sebring:Chip, is there any broadcast info on the speech yet? Libbi Rucker Reed:Appears that the emergency management community needs to do some serious public information. chip hines:I dont know, but will see if I can find out Avagene Moore:Any closing remarks? Time is up for today. Tomorrow, hopefully, Amy will moderate the Virtual Library. Dr Tom Schmidlin, Kent University, will tell us about his findings after the Feb 98 Florida tornadoes. Amy Sebring:Well, I just now see that was live on internet also. Libbi Rucker Reed:Detailing these issues and pointing out possible community/individual liabilities if mitigation projections are ignored or waived. Avagene Moore:Appreciate everyone's patience today. We had to scurry, as Amy told you. But we made it. Rick Tobin:We'll see how well we communicate after the Leonides Avagene Moore:Yes, Rick. Amy Sebring:Am looking up info re broadcast.. Amy Sebring:it is supposed to be on in a few minutes. Amy Sebring:loading loading loading David Crews:Rick, there was a good article on the metorites in the last ACS Newsletter.\ Amy Sebring:WEll see http://www.fema.gov/nwz98/witt1109.htm Amy Sebring:text of speech is there Avagene Moore:Pleased to see some of our WEBEX participants online today. David Crews:Thanks Amy. Libbi Rucker Reed:Thank you.....delighted to be able to get laptop to log on! Avagene Moore:So glad you are willing to be here after the exercise. Wasn't that a great experience? Libbi Rucker Reed:ABSOLUTELY! Isabel McCurdy:It was a BLAST, Avagene! Avagene Moore:Chip, did you hear how well WEBEX went? 77 people. Warren J Vaughn:It was an eye opener abouit some things thats for sure Avagene Moore:You and Libbi did well, Warren. chip hines:Thanks Amy... I'm sitting sideways at someone elses computer, using the FEMA connection on a lowend machine... Avagene Moore:Did TN proud. chip hines:Thanks Amy... I'm sitting sideways at someone elses computer, using the FEMA connection on a lowend machine... Isabel McCurdy:One eye or two, Warren? Warren J Vaughn:about 1 and a half Amy Sebring:OK you can see it over the internet on http://www.cspan.org/watch/ Libbi Rucker Reed:Thank you Avagene....but I think you and Amy should take major credit for developing such a wonderful exercise! Amy Sebring:Another one of those pages that takes awhile to load. Avagene Moore:Thanks, Amy. Avagene Moore:Libbi, we both worked but it was Amy's brainchild. Amy Sebring:Thanks Libbi. It couldn't have happened without all the great folks that participated. Amy Sebring:We have been telling conference attendees... Amy Sebring:Oh! Amy Sebring:If you haven't heard yet... Amy Sebring:EIIP is in Compendium of Exemplary practices... Amy Sebring:and both Avagene and I received Certificates... chip hines:I'm glsad to hear webex went well...I know a number of our folks were looking forward to it, and were convinced that it was a good concept. Isabel McCurdy: Libbi Rucker Reed:Outstanding! Congratulations to you both! Amy Sebring:of Appreciation from Randy Duncan.. Amy Sebring:for EIIP. And we forgot to thank him when we had the chance Ava!! David Crews:Congrats! Amy and Avagene! Amy Sebring:Oh well. Isabel McCurdy:Great concept, Chip. Avagene Moore:There were 4 people from FEMA who played, Chip. I forgot also, Amy. Brain dead. Amy Sebring:Ok, I have a loner laptop and have to return it. chip hines:Thanks, but it wasnt mine... I'm just a hanger-on! Amy Sebring:So I am going to write down randy's message... Amy Sebring:then I have to go. Avagene Moore:Yes, we need to get back to the conference, folks. thanks for being here today. Cheers!
