Title: |
Automating Biology: Unsupervised Transformation of Biological Data
into Actionable Information
|
Abstract:
I've heard it said that Pasteur would still feel quite at home
in a biology lab today over a century later. Our company, DuPont
Qualicon, has been working to change that fact. The science
remains the same, but we have commercialized several instruments
that have automated the decision making, particularly for
biologists in the food safety industry. I will briefly mention the
salient features of signal processing in the microbial detection
and identification arena and describe some of our products. I will
then focus on one of our instruments, the Riboprinter Microbial
Characterization System. I will describe the algorithms developed
to automate the signal-processing and I will talk about the
practical issues facing any prospective statistician,
mathematician, or system-engineer who might some day face the joy
of algorithm development.
