FYE: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

First Year Experience essay contest winners named. Article on UDaily.

We apologize for a date error on the poster, this contest closed September 26th, at midnight.

All first-year students are invited to submit a short essay related to this year's common reader as well as a question for the author. The essay contest winners will be invited to a special limited seating presentation by Rebecca Skloot and a member of the Lacks family.

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks examines a number of complex issues, such as the function of science and the role of the media in our culture, the power of the family, bioethics, racism, and poverty. There are countless others. In this essay you will choose a theme that struck you as particularly important or interesting. In a letter to the author, a member of the Lacks family, or another person represented in the book, discuss your theme and share your concerns and insights. Responses should use specific examples from the book, examples from your personal life, and/or other sources that support your point of view, but avoid simply summarizing events from the book.

  • A. Essays will be judged on persuasive use of textual evidence, clarity, and creativity. Your essay should be no more than 1000 words double-spaced, use 12-point Times New Roman, and include a heading that has the title of your essay, your name, and the best way to contact you.
  • B. Your essay submission should also include a question for the author or a member of the Lacks family.
