Approval of Salary Increases


  1. Annual Merit and Structural Adjustments - Merit Adjustments are approved by head of major unit. Permanently budgeted Basic Budget Positions are funded centrally. All others are funded by the units.
  2. Structural Adjustments - Based on a formula devised by Employee Relations, structural salary adjustments are recommended by head of major unit and approved by Vice President for Employee Relations. Permanently budgeted Basic Budget Positions are funded centrally. All others are funded by the units.
  3. Mid-Year Merit Awards for Salaried Staff - Recommended by head of major unit and approved by Vice President for Employee Relations. Permanently budgeted Basic Budget Positions are funded centrally.
    All others are funded by the units.
  4. Professional Outstanding Performance Bonuses - Recommended by head of major unit and approved by President. Funded centrally, regardless of funding source.
  5. Other Merit - Approved by head of major unit, and Vice President for Employee Relations for Professional and Salaried Staff, and by the Provost for Faculty. (Senior Vice President for Administration approval is required for all such increases in Employee Relations.) Funding to be provided from within the unit.
  6. Reclassifications for Professional and Salaried Staff - Requests for reclassification are processed through and approved by the Classification & Compensation unit of Employee Relations. (Senior Vice President for Administration approval is required for all such increases in Employee Relations.) Specific recommendations for salary increases for Professional Staff who are reclassified must be submitted for approval through the Vice President for Employee Relations to the Provost for Academic units, or the Senior Vice President for Administration for Administrative units. Generally such increases will be in the range of 5-10% of the current salary, and are funded by the units.
    Salaried staff reclassified one level will receive an increment equal to 8% of the mid-point of their new salary range, or the minimum of the range, whichever is greater. Multi-level reclassifications will receive an increment equal to 12% of the mid-point of the new salary range, or the minimum of the range, whichever is greater. Such increases are ordinarily funded by the units. (See Attachment C).
  7. Promotions for Professional and Salaried Staff - After all approvals, such as Affirmative Action, are received to promote a current employee into a new or vacant position, specific recommendations for promotional salary increases for Professional Staff must be submitted for approval through the Vice President for Employee Relations to the Provost for Academic units, or the Senior Vice President for Administration for Administrative units. Generally such increases will be in the range of 5-10% of the current salary, and are funded by the units.
    A Salaried Staff promoted one level will receive an increment equal to 8% of the mid-point of their new salary range, or the minimum of the range, whichever is greater. Multi-level promotions will receive an increment equal to 12% of the mid-point of the new salary range, or the minimum of the range, whichever is greater. Such increases are funded by the unit. (See Attachment C).
  8. Promotions for Faculty - Approved by the Provost/President and the Board of Trustees. Such increases are usually funded centrally, and occur at the beginning of the Academic year.
  9. Equity Adjustments for Professional and Salaried Staff - Approved by the Vice President for Employee Relations, upon the recommendation of the head of a major unit. (Senior Vice President for Administration approval is required for all such increases in Employee Relations.) Funding for such increases are ordinarily funded by the units.
  10. Equity Adjustments for Faculty or Chairs - Approved by the Provost, upon the recommendation of the head of a major unit. May be funded either from Provost or unit funds.
  11. Overtime and Overload for Professionals - Deans and Vice Presidents may approve additional payment for teaching when approved by academic departments. No other overtime or other form of additional payment may be paid to Professionals, except for specifically approved exceptions. These exceptions are overtime paid to Public Safety (Security) Officers, Nurses in the Student Health Center, Professionals in the College of Physical Education who are required to work evenings and weekends for non-University sponsored events (and the overtime is paid for by the sponsors) and Professionals who are Musicians and who are asked to play at a University function. All extra compensation for teaching by Defined Senior Professionals requires the approval of the President.
  12. Overload for Faculty - Approved by Chairperson, Dean, and head of department being charged. Funds from within the unit.
  13. Overtime for Salaried and Hourly Staff - In accordance with University policy, Federal laws, and collective bargaining agreement for Hourly Staff. Funds from within the unit.
  14. Temporary Pay Supplements - Individuals may be given temporary pay supplements for assuming additional responsibilities for an extended period of time, or for temporarily assuming a position of greater responsibility, if approved by the Vice President for Employee Relations for Professional and Salaried Staff, and the Provost for Faculty.
  15. Miscellaneous Wage - Hourly wage should be at least equal to the minimum rate for that classification level. (See Attachment C).
