Elbert Chance, the ‘Voice of the Blue Hens’
For almost ve decades, Fightin’ Blue Hen fans knew it was time for football when they heard these words: “Welcome to Delaware Stadium!”
Elbert Chance, AS52, 59M, the long-time director of UD alumni relations and legendary “voice of UD football,” passed away this September at age 90, leaving a long legacy of devotion not only to the campus, but to the City of Newark itself.
Chance wrote on the history of Delaware athletics and his adopted hometown for much of his career, publishing three popular books on the football team and contributing regular columns for local newspapers.
For 49 years, he also served as game announcer for his beloved Hens, missing just ve games before stepping down in 1982. “When he stopped announcing, it just wasn’t the same. A little piece of our past and remembered glory was lost,” says former Delaware Athletic Director Edgar Johnson.
Chance was a recipient of the Outstanding Alumni Award (1984), and was named to UD’s Athletics Hall of Fame (2001) and to the Alumni Wall of Fame (2003). z
