John Appleyard, AS47, of Pensacola, Fla., has helped write
a special historical issue of the Pensacola (Fla.) News Journal, which went out to 50,000 home subscribers. He has published more than 100 books throughout his career and continues to write a Sunday newspaper column.
1950s
Harry F. Themal, AS51, of Ardentown, Del., was awarded the 2016 Governor’s Heritage Award by Delaware Gov. Jack Markell. Themal has spent 66 years in journalism, mostly with the (Wilmington) News Journal, for which he still writes a weekly editorial page column.
1960s
Ella de Courcelle, AS62, of Newark, Del., received an award from the Sons of the American Revolution in appreciation of her 14 years of volunteer work as teacher of English as a Second Language.
John O’Donnell, AS64, 74M, of Philadelphia, has published his rst novel, a work of historical ction entitled Revenge at Elsinore. He has also written four full- length histories and was CEO
of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia.
1970s
Lark Howard, AS72, of Houston, Texas, has published Dangerously Yours (Diversion Books), Book 1 of the Durand Chronicles, under the pen name Lark Brennan.
Paul Henry, AS74, of Kingsville, Md., has been named Logan University’s chair of the Board of Trustees for 2016. He practices at Henry Chiropractic in Baltimore and is active with the Maryland Chiropractic Association.
Rakesh Jain, EG74M, 75PhD, of Wellesley, Mass., has been awarded the National Medal of Science
by President Barack Obama. Jain
is director of the Edwin L. Steele Laboratory for Tumor Biology at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Rita A. Rooney, HS75, of Arlington, Va., has published Quality Healthcare for Smart Consumers: Strategies to save your money, time, and health, available on Amazon and Kindle.
Stephen W. Spence, BE75, of Rehoboth Beach, Del., has been hired as senior counsel for the law rm of Baird Mandalas Brockstedt LLC.
Michael Crump, AS77, of Woodbridge, Va., is currently a volunteer/docent at the Manassas, Va., Visitor Center and Museum. He was previously employed by the federal government as a federal
contractor. In January 2015, he retired after 36 years.
Deborah Cresthull O’Neill, AS77, of Alexandria, Va., has retired after 36 years with the U.S. Department of Defense and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, most recently serving in the Senior Executive Service as director of analysis.
Leigh Grau Raposo, AS77, of Standish, Maine, has graduated with a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Southern Maine.
Melissa Mulrooney, AS77, of Stamford, Conn., has been honored with the 2016 YWCA Greenwich (Conn.) BRAVA Award, which honors accomplished professional women leaders who give back to their communities. Mulrooney is executive director of the Stamford Museum Nature Center.
Paul Scherer, AS77, of Naperville, Ill., had his new musical work “Kaddish” for chorus and orchestra premiered by the Downers Grove Choral Society and Orchestra, Downers Grove, Ill.
Ilona Holland, EHD78, of Rehoboth Beach, Del., is the author of a new children’s book, Buddy Bison’s Yellowstone Adventure. The former UD Trustee visited campus in May to read the book to children at the University’s Early Learning Center as part of her book tour.
1980s
Jonathan R. Pennock, EOE81M, 83PhD, of Lee, N.H., has been named director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Sea Grant College Program. For the past decade, he has served as director of New Hampshire Sea Grant.
Ray Murphy, ANR82, of Media, Pa., played the role of Prof. Harold Hill in a production of The Music Man at the Rose Valley Chorus and Orchestra in Media, Pa.
Jennifer Scanlon, AS82M, of Brunswick, Maine, published a biography, Until There Is Justice: The Life of Anna Arnold Hedgeman (Oxford University Press).
Rose DiSanto, AS83, of Philadelphia, addressed the 2016 convocation ceremony for UD’s Department
of Art & Design. She challenged graduates to use their art-making for a greater good, and urged her fellow artists to stand as advocates for the arts and nd their cause.
William Doerler, BE83, of Ardmore, Pa., has been promoted to counsel at the law rm of White and Williams LLP.
Robbie Tarpley Ra sh, AS84, of Sharptown, Md., is celebrating the 20th anniversary of a.s.a.p.r., the Salisbury, Md.-based integrated marketing agency she founded out of her home.
