Jim Soles changed my life

Alumni and others whose lives were touched share their memories and thoughts.

Carys Golesworthy, AS11

I was awarded the Jim Soles Undergraduate Citizenship Stipend for the summer of 2011 to help fund my internship with the U.S. Department of State at the U.S. Embassy in La Paz, Bolivia. While working in the economic and political section of the embassy for 10 weeks, I felt like I was really on the forefront of implementing U.S. foreign policy goals. Not only did I learn a lot about Bolivia, a country with many priorities so different from our own, but I also learned a lot about the United States and our work abroad. Professor Jim Soles was a man who dedicated his life to inspiring students to learn more about our country and get involved in the politics of our nation. Although unfortunately I never got to know Professor Soles personally, his legacy and the contributions he made to our school gave me the chance to have one of the most educational experiences of my life while at the embassy in South America. His influence lives on by inspiring me to make a difference in our country in the future. I hope that I make him proud.
