Professor, alumnus offer Social Security advice

ALUMNI | Can’t wait to claim your Social Security retirement benefits as soon as you possibly can? Think again, advises Jeffrey Miller, who is a partner in a new firm designed to help individuals understand how to maximize their Social Security benefits.

Miller, a professor of economics at UD, is joined in the new venture by his partners, William Dowd, BE09, who majored in economics and international relations; Russell Settle, a retired UD professor; and Ellis Wilson, a doctoral candidate in computer science at Pennsylvania State University and the firm’s computer programmer.

Their work was featured in a July 26 “Bucks” blog entry in The New York Times.

“Consider us the H&R Block of Social Security,” Miller says. “Here’s a very complicated government program, and we’ve designed a way to help guide you through it.” He calls the number of possible choices about when and how to begin collecting Social Security benefits “bewildering.”

Social Security Choices has developed a software tool that provides a custom analysis of ways to maximize the lifetime value of benefits.
