ALUMNI | Alumni around the United States meet regularly for informal gatherings, local sporting events, receptions with special guests such as University President Patrick Harker and a host of other activities.

Such UD alumni clubs provide a way for former Blue Hens to keep in touch with old friends, to welcome newcomers to the area and to stay connected to their alma mater.

Although the club coordinators and members strive for variety in their meetings, a number of events over the past several months focused on baseball. Denver alumni attended a Rockies game in July, for example, while in August fans from the Bay Area Alumni Club enjoyed a Giants game; New Castle County, Del., alumni attended a Wilmington Blue Rocks game; the Philadelphia area club watched the Phillies take on the Washington Nationals; and Baltimore alumni cheered for the Orioles against the Yankees.

Baltimore alumni and friends turned out to watch the Orioles take on the Yankees.

Most of the events featured a pre-game dinner or lunch and a variety of activities. Joe Flacco (the Blue Hens quarterback now playing for the Baltimore Ravens) jerseys were raffled off, and alumni played University trivia and other games, with winners taking home such prizes as UD T-shirts and UDconnection.com travel mugs.

Special guests at some of the events included alumnus Dallas Green, BE ’56, who played baseball at UD in the ’50s and went on to play major league ball and to lead the 1980 Phillies to their first World Series victory; Edgar Johnson, CHS’ 67, CHEP ’70M, director of athletics at UD; and Nicole Sherry, AG ’02, head groundskeeper at Baltimore’s Camden Yards stadium.

The summer-related alumni events concluded fittingly on Labor Day weekend, with a get-together as the Blue Hens kicked off their football season at the University of Maryland. Harker hosted a pre-game tailgate that drew such alumni as Karen Keane, BE ’78, and Marion Thompson, CHEP ’66, both of whom became active in the alumni community after attending Harker’s introductory receptions in Baltimore and Washington, D.C., earlier this year.
